Churches in Great Waltham Parish

Ford End: St John the Evangelist

St John the Evangelist Church Lane/Sandon Hill Ford End Chelmsford

This lovely church (built in 1870 on an osier bed) was designed by Frederic Chancellor, with a super-confident catslide roof over the south aisle. The simple interior has wonderfully precise brickwork, a lovely arcade to the south aisle and windows of cathedral glass. It has a fine acoustic for the spoken word. The unstable ground led to the demolition of the east end, and for many years the tower was believed unsafe for bell-ringing, but now our fine peal of 6 bells (the lightest of its type in Essex) rings out joyfully again. Statues of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John guard the corners of the tower.
Inside we treasure the memorial to Rev’d Arthur Shearly Cripps, vicar here twice, who is revered as virtually a saint in Zimbabwe where he served as missionary. We also have Rolls of Duty & Honour listing villagers who volunteered to serve in WWI. It’s a happy church and services involve the local school and pre-school children and their familes.  All are welcome!

Please note: we share services and events with St Mary & St Lawrence, Great Waltham, and St Nicholas, Chignal Smealy.

Great Waltham: St Mary & St Lawrence

St Mary & St Lawrence Church The Village Great Waltham Chelmsford

It’s a fine light and spacious church, unusually wide for a Norman church, with a wonderful acoustic for music. The angels on the early 16th century roof beams gaze down on even more ancient pews, fine glass and wood carvings, and on the wonderful tomb of the Everard family with their little children.
There's Roman brick in the tower, castellated side aisles and tower, and the heaviest set of 8 bells in Essex. The church is set in a beautiful churchyard with several other ancient and important buildings around, and there is a charming lime walk studded with snowdrops and daffodils in spring.
The tower contains a community room (used for Sunday School too) and toilets; we have a small kitchen area at the back of the north aisle. There is a children’s area in the church for children to sit and draw or play quietly during services, under their parents’ care.

We welcome everyone to our services.  Please note that we share events and worship with St John the Evangelist, Ford End, and St Nicholas, Chignal Smealy.

With such a wonderful old church we are always fundraising for repairs and improvements - we have just redecorated the inside and it looks wonderful!  Our active Friends group puts the "fun" into "fundraising". Contact them via the churchwardens!
